The Delaware County Intermediate Unit, U.S. Veterans Legacy Project and National Veterans Education Project are pleased to announce the 2015 Mary Ryan Memorial Essay Contest in honor of the annual Veteran’s Day celebration in Media, PA. The goals of the contest are to encourage Delaware County students to learn more about US war history, veterans and how they help preserve our freedom, to demonstrate to our veterans that our students are indeed grateful for their service and to provide our youth with a way to say thank you to our veterans for dedicating their lives to protect our country. We also believe it is important that our students have an opportunity to learn more about the political, economic and social circumstances that led to wars throughout our history. The contest is an integral part of the overall Veteran’s Day event – a long-standing tradition in Delaware County. We look forward to having your school participate this year.
The essay contest is open to all Delaware County students in grades 6 through 8. A 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner will be chosen for the contest, each one winning a cash prize. The winners will be asked to read his/her winning essay during the 2015 Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony at 11:11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, in front of the Delaware County Courthouse in Media, PA.
The focus of the Parade this year is “Honoring all Veterans.” The essay contest will focus on the bravery of and sacrifices made by U.S. veterans in all wars and we are asking students to interview family members or close friends who are veterans.
Complete rules and details are listed on the attached information page, which we ask that you distribute or post within your school and encourage your students to participate.
